Hamden, CT - Wilson Matos (Larchmont, N.Y.) cracked a two-run home run to lead the Quinnipiac University baseball team to an 11-1 victory over the University of Hartford on Sunday afternoon in Hamden. Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) added two RBIs of his own and Andy Mayer (Trumbull, Conn.) started and pitched six shutout innings in the Bobcats' victory. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 6-6-1 on the season, while Hartford falls to 4-15 with the loss. Quinnipiac got on the board first in the home half of the second inning. Matos led off the inning with a double over the third base bag and down the left field line. After walks to Jeff Carino (Greenwich, Conn.) and Doyle loaded the bases, John Simone (Setauket, N.Y.) worked a walk as well to force in a run and pick up an RBI. Ryan Ullrich (Woodbridge, Conn.) followed by grounding into a double play which brought Carino in from third to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Quinnipiac would continue to build their lead in the bottom of the third. Jeff Mainetti (Guilford, Conn.) worked a two-out walk and then Matos followed by turning on an off-speed pitch and drilling a two-run home run down the left field line to open the Bobcats lead to 4-0. After three scoreless innings, Hartford would get their only offense of the afternoon in the top of the seventh inning. With Joe Duffy (Commack, N.Y.) entering the game in relief of Mayer, Erik Price grounded a single through the left side to lead off the inning for Hartford. Chris Hebert then reached on a fielding error by Matos at shortstop and David Grossman lined a single to right field to load the bases. Matt O'Connell followed by grounding into a double play which chased Price home from third to cut the Quinnipiac lead to 4-1. However, the unearned run would be all Hartford would get on the afternoon, as Duffy would close the door the rest of the way. Quinnipiac would blow the game open in the bottom half of the seventh. The Bobcats would capitalize on control problems which plagued four different Hartford pitchers over the course of the inning. Quinnipiac took advantage of four walks and three wild pitches to score seven runs on only three hits to extend the lead to 11-1. Doyle had the inning's big blow when he lined a two-run single to left field, plating both Matos and Mainetti. Tim Binkoski (North Haven, Conn.) followed with a pinch-hit, RBI double down the right field line which brought home pinch runner Michael Marmo (Roslyn, N.Y.). Ullrich then picked up an RBI with a single to right field which scored Doyle and, later in the inning, Randy Gress (Shelton, Conn.) would pick up an RBI on a ground out to second base which brought Binkoski home. On the mound, Mayer started and earned the victory for Quinnipiac to improve to 2-1. He pitched six innings of shutout baseball, striking out three while allowing only four hits, a walk, and a hit batter. Duffy pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season. He struck out one Hartford batter and surrendered only an unearned run on three hits and a walk. For Hartford, Chris Greiner started and took the loss to fall to 0-4 on the season. He pitched 3.1 innings and struck out one, but gave up four runs on three hits, seven walks, a wild pitch and a hit batter. Quinnipiac returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 when they visit Yale for a midweek, non-conference game in New Haven at 3 p.m. The Bobcats then open Northeast Conference play next weekend when they visit Fairleigh Dickinson for four games on April 5-7. Quinnipiac returns home on April 13-15 when they host Central Connecticut State for four games in their first NEC home series of the season. |
