DETROIT TIGERS vs. ATLANTA BRAVES

Atlanta, GA - Kenshin Kawakami was known for his sharp control in Japan and didn't have trouble throwing strikes for the Braves during six Spring Training starts in Florida.

That certainly wasn't the case in his first trip to the mound at Turner Field, however.

The former Japanese star walked seven and hit a batter while lasting just 2 2/3 innings Saturday during an 8-4 loss to Detroit. Of his 74 pitches, just 33 were strikes.

"I don't think I've ever walked so many in nine innings," Kawakami said through his translator. "So in three innings, it must be a first."

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the second inning and two more in the third before Kawakami, who was scheduled to work five innings, was replaced by top prospect Tommy Hanson.

Kawakami received polite applause as he left the mound, but it certainly wasn't the first impression he was hoping to make in his Atlanta debut.

"I really wasn't able to pitch the way I wanted," Kawakami said. "It was a shock."

At least it was just an exhibition game. The right-hander will make his first regular-season start next Saturday night at Turner Field against the Nationals.

"I learned a lot," Kawakami said. "I'm just going to have to adjust."

Kawakami, 33, pitched as part of a six-man rotation in Japan, and the Braves plan to give him extra time between starts whenever they can. Derek Lowe will pitch the season opener at Philadelphia on Sunday night, as well as the home opener next Friday.

"It's not the best to time to have [a bad game]," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said. "You want to get it out of your mind as quick as possible.

"I've got a lot of confidence in him. I think he'll be fine."

In his Grapefruit League starts, Kawakami was 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA. But he had no control of his curveball against the Tigers, and that had been one of his best pitches.

"It felt like my curve wasn't breaking well," the righty said. "I didn't have full control of it."

"I've never seen him like that," Cox said. "Hopefully, that's his bad game."

Kawakami didn't blame pitching in Atlanta for the first time or problems with the mound for his struggles.

"No pressure," Kawakami said. "The mound felt comfortable and I like the stadium."

It was just the results that he didn't like. Not at all.

"He was very embarrassed," a Japanese reporter said.

Hanson, who will start the season at Triple-A Gwinnett, followed Kawakami, and in three innings gave up four runs on seven hits, including a homer by Carlos Guillen. But at least Hanson threw strikes, fanning four while walking none.

The same couldn't be said for Kawakami.
