PORTLAND SEA DOGS vs. CONNECTICUT DEFENDERS

Debut game of the Connecticut Defenders (formerly known as the Norwich Navigators)

April 6, 2006 - Chris Begg tossed seven masterful innings, and Nate Schierholtz hit the first home run in Defenders history, as the Connecticut Defenders defeated the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-1, at Dodd Stadium tonight.

After allowing a leadoff home run to Luis Jimenez in the second inning, Begg preceded to retire 13 Sea Dogs in row. In all, Begg allowed just two hits and one walk in his seven innings of work. He struck out six, and the Jimenez homer was the only blemish on what was otherwise a sterling performance in the cold weather. Five of Begg's seven innings pitched were 1-2-3 innings.

Rightfielder Nate Shierholtz would provide Begg with the only run support he would need with a two-run blast to right-center in the first inning. Schierholtz, Justin Knoedler and Travis Ishikawa all had multi-hit games and Eddy Martinez-Esteve knocked in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a double.

The Defenders will be back in action Friday night in Game Two of their four-game series with Portland. RHP Chris Smith is scheduled to get the start for the Sea Dogs and he will be opposed by LHP Pat Misch for the Defenders. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
