ERIE SEAWOLVES vs. CONNECTICUT DEFENDERS

August 12, 2006 - The Connecticut Defenders got a five RBI performance from Jake Wald, who finished with a grand slam, and just a double shy of the cycle in a 7-3 win over the Erie Seawolves. The win was the Defenders fourth straight.

The Defenders got on the board in the 2nd inning when Jake Wald battled with the bases loaded for seven pitches before getting one to drive, and he hit it deep over the left field wall for a Grand Slam, his fourth home run of the year, and the Defenders second grand slam of the year, giving them a 4-0 lead. The Defenders made it a 5-0 lead in the 6th when they strung three straight two out singles together beginning with Wald this time. He scored on one of four Nate Schierholtz hits. Schierholtz also knocked in two runs.

Garrett Broshuis was fantastic, shutting Erie out over six innings of work, allowing only three hits. The Sea Wolves would get to the bullpen, scoring two runs in the top of the 8th inning on Jeff Petersen. In the bottom of the 8th, the Defenders got them both back thanks to Wald and Schierholtz again. Wald hit an RBI triple to drive in Todd Jennings, and then scored on Schierholtz’s single to restore the Defenders lead to 7-2. Joe Bateman struggled with his command in the 9th inning, walking three, but he held on to the lead for a 7-3 win and his 10th save of the year.

The Defenders will try for the sweep and their fifth win in a row on Sunday afternoon, and to do it they will send left-hander Geno Espineli (6-5) to the mound. The Erie Sea Wolves will counter with right hander Eulogio De La Cruz (4-5). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
