BROOKLYN CYCLONES vs. VERMONT LAKE MONSTERS EXPOS

TRIBUTE TO THE MONTREAL EXPOS

BURLINGTON, VT - The Brooklyn Cyclones took an early 4-0 lead and held on for a 6-4 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Saturday evening at historic Centennial Field.

Brooklyn had a 2-0 lead two batters into the game as Dustin Martin led off with a single and Joe Holden followed with a two-run homer to rightfield off Lake Monsters starter Cole Kimball. The Cyclones added another run in the second on a fielder's choice RBI and another in the third on a double play for a 4-0 lead.

Vermont cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third on a Jeremy Goldschmeding double and RBI triple by Michael Martinez, who scored when the throw to third was wild. The Lake Monsters got within 4-3 in the fourth on a solo home run by Francisco Guzman, his second round-tripper of the season.

The Cyclones got a couple of insurance runs in the fifth on a two-out bloop single to center, walk, passed ball and a two-run single to rightfield from Tim Grogan for a 6-3 lead. Vermont got its final run of the game in the sixth on a Justin Maxwell double, passed ball and RBI groundout by Guzman.

Vermont (.209) and Brooklyn (.206) came into the game with two of the three lowest team batting averages in the New York-Penn League. But they combined for 10 runs on 17 hits, including seven extra base hits.

Martin and Jonathan Sanchez both had two hits for Brooklyn (11-13), which won its fifth consecutive game. Martinez and Maxwell both had two hits for Vermont (7-18), which has lost six of its last seven and 11 of their last 14 games.

Eric Brown (1-0) allowed four runs (three earned) over 5.2 innings for the win, while Rip Warren struckout four in 2.1 scoreless innings and Joseph Smith a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save. Kimball (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits in two innings for the loss.

The two teams will play game two of the three-game series at Centennial on Sunday beginning at 5:05 pm. It is Vermont State Parks Night at the ballpark.
