LONG ISLAND DUCKS vs. BRIDGEPORT BLUEFISH


Bridgeport, CT - The Bridgeport Bluefish scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Long Island Ducks, 9-4, on Thursday evening in front of 2,985 fans at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

With the win, the Bluefish have tied Long Island for first place in the North Division.

The Bluefish jumped onto the scoreboard first when they scored three, two-out runs in the bottom of the first inning. Barry Wesson smacked an RBI-triple down the right field line, scoring Angel Espada from second. Wesson would then score on a Damian Rolls RBI-double off the left centerfield wall, making the score 2-0. Carlos Rodriguez extended the lead to 3-0 when he guided a RBI-single to centerfield, easily plating Rolls from second.

The Bluefish scored their fourth unanswered run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rolls hit a bouncer up the middle, scoring Deivi Cruz from second.

The Ducks amassed four runs in the top of sixth inning when Carlos Hernandez lined an RBI-single to leftfield, scoring Mel Stocker from third. In the next at-bat, Henry Rodriguez drove in Hernandez by lacing a RBI-double to right centerfield, bringing the score to 4-2. After a Bucky Jacobsen fly-out, Erick Almonte singled to centerfield, plating Rodriguez from second base. Bryan Goelz tied the game at four runs apiece after he laced a seeing-eye single up the middle, driving in Almonte from second.

After two scoreless frames, the Bluefish regained the lead (5-4) after Carlos Rodriguez crushed his third home run of the year over the Bridgeport Hospital sign in left field. Norm Hutchins, who pinch ran for Hector Kuilan, stole second and then scored on a throwing error by Almonte to make the score 6-4. The Bluefish extended the lead to three runs (7-4) after Bryant Nelson laid a drag bunt down the first base side, bringing in Steve Hine. Barry Wesson gave the Bluefish their largest lead of the game after he laced a two-run single up the middle, plating Buzz Hannahan and Nelson.

Bridgeport starter Matt Beech went 5.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking none on 90 pitches. Ducks’ starter Bill Pulsipher pitched seven-plus innings, surrendering seven earned runs on 13 hits while striking out three and walking two on 106 pitches.

The Bluefish will end their nine-game homestand when they host Atlantic City from July 28th through July 30th. Sunday will have a special start time of 1:05, to make way for the Nutmeg Games. Right-hander T.J. Mathews (9-3) will take the hill for the Bluefish tomorrow while Mark Persails (6-3) will start for the Atlantic City Surf. The game will commence at 7:05 p.m. with fireworks at the end of the contest.

Jimmy Journell earned his third win of the year, pitching two shut out innings. Journell has not allowed an earned run since July 23rd.

Bluefish Notes:

Wesson’s triple in the first inning gave was his seventh of the year, adding to his comfortable league lead in that department.

Cruz extended his hitting streak to 16 games, going 1-for-5
