BRADENTON JUICE vs. MACON MUSIC

Nick Utley pitched his finest professional game, and the Macon bats all pitched in to help pull out a series win against the Juice. Every single Macon starter got a hit as the Music won 12-2. The Music now stand at 8-7 on the second half of the South Coast League season.

Nick Utley came out firing bullets following his worst performance since joining the Macon Music. “He had noticeably better stuff than he’s had all year coming out of the pen,” pitching coach Bryce Florie said. And Utley used it to keep Bradenton from putting anything together. Over six innings, Utley didn’t allow a single Juice runner to cross home plate and only allowed two to get hits.

For the first four innings, the Music offense looked as though it was going to need to rely on Utley’s great outing if the Macon club would win. Bradenton starter Lavelle Morgan held the Music hitless through four. In the fifth, however, everything started to change. After Morgan hit Carlos Arroyo with a pitch and allowed Dorian Rojas double, Morgan threw a wild pitch that scored Arroyo and a Scott Robinson sac fly to knock in Rojas. The real explosion though was still to come.

In the seventh inning, every single Macon batter came to the plate. After three straight singles to begin the inning, Juice reliever Jim O’Malia allowed an RBI single to Felipe Del Rosario and a two RBI single to Ashley Hooks. After Steve Alverson replaced O’Malia, the Music got a 2 RBI double off the bat of Dorian Rojas, followed by a Scott Robinson RBI double. In total, the Music scored seven runs on seven hits in the seventh inning.

One of the bright lights on a high wattage night was Chris Colton, who was playing only his second game for the Music. Colton had been playing for a while on the West Coast, but is a native Georgian and had only one word when asked how it felt to be back: “Awesome.” His manager, Phil Plantier, noted his addition was a huge part of the team’s success on the night. “He anchored the lineup today,” the skipper said succinctly. After a hitless night to begin his Music career, Colton went four for four with 2 runs. “The big thing is staying constant,” Colton explained. “Yesterday, I hit a couple of balls hard. Today, I came out and didn’t worry about my mechanics—just see the ball and hit the ball.”

Hooks, who was the starting pitcher in the previous game, got the start at second base. “Ashley’s a good athlete,” Plantier said, “and he swings the bat well, so we went for it. It kind of lightened the mood a little bit.” After the release of Junior Kelley earlier in the day, Plantier was managing a shortened roster. Even those there were in new places, such as Travis Wiley playing short for just the second time on the year. “One thing about Wiley,” Plantier noted, “he can play every position on the field. We’re very happy with what he did defensively tonight.”

To add to the roster, the Music coaches are holding a workout with some invited players to look for new additions. The coaches all know what they have and like their team, and are hoping to get guys who blend in well.

Notes:
Attendance for the night was 799…Don Brown was the umpire behind the plate, while Charlie Stevens was his comrade in the field…Tommy Donaldson threw out the first pitch with some help from his granddaughters. Donaldson was at the ballpark with the group of Donaldson, Garrett, and Associates, Inc…Brettlin Spangler operated the scoreboard. Brettlin was provided by Sabrina Sikora Productions…A scary moment happened to end the eight inning, when Macon pitcher Charles O’Neal was hit by a line drive in the head. O’Neal managed to walk off under his own power and was alert and talking, with no obvious injury.
