After sweeping the best team in the Eastern League on their turf, the Defenders dropped their first game at home in a week to the visiting Altoona Curve, 7-3. Altoona struck first and struck often in the contest as they scored their first two runs in the second. Jason Bowers reached on an error by Olmo Rosario at second and came across the plate on an RBI groundout by Miguel Perez. The next run crossed the plate as Curve starter Corey Hamman hammered a doubled down the right field line to plate Luis Cruz to give the visiting club a 2-0 lead. Connecticut got one back in the third inning as Rosario led off the frame with a double. Antoan Richardson then delivered a two-out single to send Rosario home as it became a 2-1 ballgame. The Curve didn't wait long to extend their lead as three runs came in to score in the fourth inning on five base hits as Altoona took a commanding 5-1 advantage. The Defs dug into the lead a little bit in the fifth inning on another RBI single off the bat of Rosario, this time scoring Simon Klink from second base to make it 5-2. One more in the sixth and another in the ninth for the visitors coupled with a sacrifice fly by Travis Ishikawa in the seventh made the game a 7-3 final in favor of the Curve. Adam Cowart suffered his fourth loss of the season as he checked in for five innings, allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 base hits, walked one and struck out zero. Dave Davidson earned his second win of the year as Evan Meek locked down save number two of 2008. |
