Gwinnett, GA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees defeated the Gwinnett Braves 8-2 in the series finale on Sunday at Gwinnett Stadium. Scranton improves to 38-25 while Gwinnett drops to 34-30 on the season. Shelley Duncan's first RBI of the game came in the first frame. The Yankees' right-fielder dropped a single in front of Brandon Jones in left field to score Kevin Russo from second. That gave the Yankees an early 1-0 advantage, but Gwinnett answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Reid Gorecki led off the bottom of the first with a double to left. Gorecki advanced to third on a J.C. Holt bunt single and then scored when the next batter, Casey Kotchman, grounded into a force out at second. Back-to-back singles by Brooks Conrad and Brandon Jones pushed Kotchman across to give Gwinnett the 2-1 lead. But three Yankees scored three runs in the third and three more in the fourth to re-take and extend their lead to 7-2. In the third inning, Shelley Duncan plated Austin Jackson with a double to left field, for his second RBI of the game. Juan Miranda followed with a single and with runners on the corners, Justin Leone, smacked a double to drive in Duncan. Eric Duncan followed suit and drove in Miranda with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth inning, Major League rehab Cody Ransom put the game out of reach with a three-run home run off G-Braves' starter Todd Redmond. Scoring on the play was Doug Bernier and Kevin Russo. Shelley Duncan added one more insurance run in the sixth. Duncan walked, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice fly. He then came in to score on a two-out error by right fielder Brian Barton. Scranton starter Sergio Mitre allowed just two earned runs in seven innings to earn his first win of the season. He is now 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Gwinnett starter Todd Redmond allowed seven earned runs in four innings and was charged with his fifth loss of the season. Redmond is now 3-5 with a 4.88 ERA. Gwinnett hits the road for an eight-game road trip starting on Monday with four games at Indianapolis and four at Louisville. The team returns home on Tuesday, June 23 for a four-game series against Buffalo. |
