BOWIE BAYSOX vs. CONNECTICUT DEFENDERS

June 17, 2006 - The Connecticut Defenders road Matt Palmer for seven scoreless innings before scoring a run en route to a 1-0 shutout win to secure the team’s first three game win streak in over a month.

The game got off to a late start as a heavy shower rolled through just before the scheduled 6:35 start time. The first pitch was thrown by Palmer at 8:05, and when he was finished, he had faced twenty-four batters allowing only three singles and a walk while striking out seven. Palmer faced no more than four batters in a single inning while improving to 5-3.

The offense was slow, but better late than never against Brian Finch. Finch was solid throughout, but back-to-back one out walks in the bottom of the 7th inning of a scoreless game led to his un-doing. He was pulled in favor of Jason Pearson who faced Jon Armitage with one out. Armitage hit a routine ground ball to short with runners on first and second base. Shortstop Rayner Bautista flipped the ball to second for one out, but in an effort to turn an inning ending double play, Gera Alvarez made a throw that was neither on time nor accurate. It got by first baseman Mario Delgado and pinch runner Randy Walter came around to score from second base on the error. Jake Wald’s clean and hard take out slide at second was a key component of the play.

Scott Munter came on in relief and completed the two inning save while only allowing a two out single in the 8th inning that was not costly. For Munter, it was his 1st save as Connecticut finished the win. They will try to make it a sweep on Father’s day with a 2:05 first pitch on Sunday afternoon against Bowie. Right hander Chris Begg (5-6) goes to the mound for Connecticut. The Baysox will counter with left hander Eric DuBose(0-0).
