BLUEFISH WIN IN BOTTOM OF NINTH, 2-1 OVER PENNSYLVANIA Stay atop North Division with league-best 30-18 record BRIDGEPORT, Conn., June 23, 2002 - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the visiting Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 2-1, before 4,179 fans on Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. It was the eighth consecutive victory for Bridgeport against Pennsylvania in 2002. With a runner on first and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Bluefish infielder Jose Amado (1-for-4) singled to right field. With Oreste Marrero (1-for-4, run), who had singled in the previous at-bat, charging up a head of steam into third base, Pennsylvania outfielder Wil Quintana's throw sailed over third baseman Ricardo Montas. As the ball bounced into the stands above the Road Warriors dugout, Marrero came home with the game-winning run as the Bluefish registered their first walk-off win of 2002. In the top of the inning, the momentum had swung the way of the Warriors as Joel Zaragoza (2-for-4, RBI) tied the game, 1-1, with his first career home run, coming off of reliever Bryan Wolff. For Wolff (2-2), it was his second blown save in three appearances. The Atlantic League's leader in saves (11) ended up with win, however, as the 'Fish picked up their teammate in the home half of the inning. Both starting pitchers were outstanding for their respective teams. Bluefish RHP Gil Perez (3 H, 3 SO) threw eight scoreless innings in allowing only three Road Warriors to reach base, and none past first until Javier Sein advanced to second on a ground-out by Sandy DeLeon in the visiting half of the eighth. In seven appearances (six starts) at Harbor Yard thus far, the right-hander has posted a 2-2 record with a 2.92 ERA. Tim Kester (1-5) shut down the Bluefish offense for seven innings in what was only his third start of the year. The eighth inning was a different story as Hector Kuilan (1-for-3) hit his third double of the year after Brendan Kingman had reached on a single with one out. Centerfielder Stanton Cameron bobbled the ball, allowing Kingman to score as Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead heading into the ninth. But that advantage would be short-lived with Zaragoza hitting his first home run of the year near the railroad tracks above the right-field wall. Rolo Avila singled in his first three times at-bat and collected three of the four hits for the 'Fish off of Kester in the first seven innings. It was the 17th multi-hit game for the lead-off hitter, which leads the team. With their second consecutive sweep of the Road Warriors in 2002, the Bluefish improve to an Atlantic League-best 30-18 while the Road Warriors fall to an Atlantic League-worst 11-35. Bridgeport will send LHP Alan Mahaffey (7-1, 3.79) to the mound on Monday evening to face Somerset's Ray Davis (4-3, 3.16) in the first game of a six-game road trip. FISH FACTS: Bluefish starters have now pitched at least five innings in 32 of the last 36 outings...despite losing the lead briefly in the ninth, Bridgeport remains undefeated (26-0) when leading after eight innings...with Kester going eight-plus innings for the Road Warriors, the 'Fish now hold a 16-8 record when the opposing starter pitches at least six innings. |
