Bridgeport, CT - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Newark Bears Friday Night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The game featured a pitcher's duel between the starters Jerome Robertson of Newark and Will Cunnane for the Bluefish. Cunnane picked up the win as he notched seven complete innings allowing two earned runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts. Robertson exited after six innings with no decision allowing two runs while notching 10 strikeouts. Newark struck early as they grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Donaldo Mendez lead off the game with a single, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored on Doug Devore's single. The Bears extended their lead in the 4th as Devore singled, advanced to second on a ground out and was plated by Will Pennyfeather's RBI single. The Bluefish wasted little time in responding as they tallied their first run in the bottom of the 4th. Barry Wesson led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third on a Gary Burham single and Jamie Pogue walk. Steve Hine picked up an RBI on a walk. Gary Burnham doubled to start the 6th inning but was erased on a failed bunt attempt by Tino Sanchez. Jamie Pogue hit his second double of the night to advance Sanchez to third and Hine picked up his second RBI of the night as he hit a sac fly to center. The Bluefish pushed across the eventual winning run in their seventh as Angel Espada led off the inning with a walk, stole second base and was driven in by Tino Sanchez' RBI single. Relievers Matt Montgomery and Luther Hackman each pitched a scoreless inning in relief with Hackman earning his second save of the season. |
