Bridgeport, CT - The Bridgeport Bluefish battled the Lancaster Barnstormers for 14 innings coming out on top after a walk-off homerun from the bat of Bluefish first baseman Tino Sanchez. The Bluefish got their bats working early as Sanchez and Angel Echevarria both had singles in the first inning of Monday's game. With Sanchez on second and Echevarria on first, Bluefish centerfielder Alex Fernandez singled to right scoring Sanchez and giving the Bluefish an early lead. The Barnstormers threatened to tie the game with a runner on third base and two outs in the second when Manny Santana hit a liner to right-center. Bluefish centerfielder, Alex Fernandez, robbed Santana's hit making a sliding grab to end the inning and save a run. Tino Sanchez singled through the right side with one out in the bottom of the fifth making way for Echevarria to hit a grounder that was mishandled by Barnstormer third baseman Travis Hake. Hake threw the ball into to the ground past first baseman Manny Santana allowing Sanchez to score all the way from first. Quincy Foster then lead off the 6th inning for Lancaster with a walk and followed with a stolen base putting him in position to score. Two fly balls to right field allowed Foster to tag and advance to third and then home for the Barnstormer's first score of the game. Foster reached base for the third straight time in the top of the eighth inning with a single to right off of Bluefish reliever Scotty Layfield. Heilman followed with a single up the middle. The Bluefish then brought in left hander Colin Young to face the lefty hitter Reggie Taylor. Taylor pulled a ball down the right field line bringing home Heilman and Foster. Taylor advanced to third on the play. Pinch Hitter Ortiz then hit a fly ball to left deep enough for Taylor to tag from third giving Lancaster a two run lead. In the Bottom of the eighth Deivi Cruz tripled to left, ending Harriger's day and making way for Barnstormer reliever Charlie Weatherby. After retiring Barry Wesson Weatherby gave up a ground ball hit to Luis Figueroa that brought Cruz home from third cutting Lancaster's lead to one. Lancaster brought in the 6'7" closer Scott Patterson to finish out the game but the Bluefish bats were still alive. Sanchez hit a game-tying solo shot down the right field line, his second of the season, to keep the Fish alive and send the game into extra innings. Lancaster was looking to take the lead in the top of the 10th when Foster singled down the left field line. Heilman then doubled to right-center. Fernandez picked up the ball and fired it to the cutoff man, Espada, who relayed the ball home to nail the speedster, Foster, and keep the game tied at four. Rob Henkel took the mound in the bottom of the 14th to face the hot bat of Sanchez. Sanchez took the first pitch he saw and drove it over the fence in left field, giving Sanchez his second homer of the night, and the Bluefish a win. |
