CHARLESTON RIVERDOGS vs. GREENVILLE DRIVE

Greenville, SC - Stephen Fife had a big hole to fill, as he was taking Casey Kelly’s spot in the rotation after a recent promotion. The 2008 third round selection passed with flying colors Saturday night, limiting the Charleston RiverDogs (28-21) to an unearned run in the Drive’s (25-23) 3-1 win in front of a season-high 6,408 fans.

Making his 2009 debut, the right-hander did not factor into the decision, however, exiting after 4.0 innings due to a strict pitch count. Fife was added to the Greenville roster from Extended Spring Training earlier in the day.

Mitch Herold (2-0) was the beneficiary of what Fife started, holding Charleston scoreless for 3.0 innings while picking up four strikeouts. Felix Ventura tossed the eighth and ninth innings, striking out a season-high four strikeouts to earn his fourth save.

The RiverDogs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Melky Mesa led off the inning by reaching base on catcher’s interference by Tim Federowicz. The speedy outfielder then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Corban Joseph’s RBI-single.

David Marks tied the game in the bottom of the third, belting a leadoff homer for his third round-tripper of the season. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Zach Gentile beat out a two-out, infield single and David Mailman followed with an RBI-triple.

Anthony Rizzo tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, blasting a leadoff homer off Cory Arbiso (1-4) for his sixth of 2009.

The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four-game series Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 4:05 PM. John Smoltz will make his second rehab start for the Drive, and first at Fluor Field, as Charleston counters with right-hander Andrew Brackman.

Because it is the Red Sox Nation Celebration at Fluor Field during this home stand, the Red Sox’ mascot, Wally the Green Monster, will be at the ballpark tomorrow to entertain fans. It is also Family FunDay in which kids 12 and under get to run the bases after the game. GAME NOTES:
8 of the Drive’s 9 batters recorded a hit…with his double in the 2nd inning, Ryan Lavarnway extended his hit streak to 11 games…the Drive now trail the RiverDogs by 2.5 games in the South Atlantic League Southern Division
