WASHINGTON STOLEN PROPERTY NATIONALS vs. ATLANTA BRAVES

Atlanta, GA - Maybe the Braves were motivated by the fact that they were inching closer to their first last-place finish in 18 years. Or maybe it was finally time for the Nationals to show why they've rested in last place for almost the entirety of this season.

Whatever the case, the Braves certainly provided Jair Jurrjens plenty of support while claiming a convincing 10-5 win over the Nationals at Turner Field on Friday night. This marked the first time Atlanta has claimed consecutive victories since Aug. 9.

Kelly Johnson enjoyed a three-hit night, and Brandon Jones highlighted a decisive seven-run third inning with a three-run double. The support was certainly welcomed by Jurrjens, who overcame some early control problems and limited the Nationals to one earned run and six hits in five innings.

While winning for the first time since Aug. 9, Jurrjens aided his cause by beginning the third-inning uprising with a single. Two batters later, Johnson produced an RBI double off Nationals starter Jason Bergmann, who then suddenly lost his control. Bergmann saw his abbreviated evening finish when he walked three of the next four batters that he faced.

Jurrjens needed 50 pitches to complete the first two innings and escaped the first inning unscathed when Roger Bernadina ended the threat with a bases-loaded groundout. But Bernadina exacted some revenge with a two-out third-inning RBI triple that briefly tied the game.

Johnson, who is hitting .467 over his past seven games, doubled and scored in the fourth inning and added a fifth-inning RBI single. The extra runs provided some comfort after Elmer Dessens allowed the Nationals to score three seventh-inning runs.
