Bridgeport, CT - The Bluefish continue to close in on a playoff birth after beating the Newark Bears 5-2. T.J. Mathews earned his 12th win of the season giving up one run on seven hits through six innings of work. The Bears jumped onto the board quickly in the first inning when Victor Valencia put a ball off the top of Harbor Yard's left field wall, scoring Jack Santora. A strong throw from Bluefish left-fielder Darryl Brinkley was able to get Will Pennyfeather at home plate to prevent anymore runs from scoring. Darryl Brinkley reached on an error in the bottom of the first inning setting up for Deivi Cruz who ripped his eighth homerun of the season off of the Arena beyond the left field fence. The Bluefish would leave the inning leading 2-1. Hector Kuilan lead off the bottom of the second inning with a single through the right side. Bryant Nelson then ripped a liner through the right side moving Kuilan over to third. Nelson then stole second and advanced to third on the overthrow. Kuilan also scored on the overthrow and Nelson scored next on a wild pitch. The Bluefish tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth after Willis Otanez singled and continued to score from first on a double from Tony Mota. Mota's first hit as a Bluefish in 2006. Sean Fesh took over for the Bluefish in the seventh inning and hit leadoff batter Anthony Sanders then walked Nick Steppe. Santora brought home Sanders with an infield grounder to make the score 5-2. Scotty Layfield came in to close out the inning. Jimmy Journell (4-4) came on for the Bluefish in the ninth and struck out three batters to earn his fourth save of the season. |
