Can-Am League Championship Series Game #4

Brockton, MA - Behind a strong pitching performance and timely hitting, the Brockton Rox beat the Quebec Capitales 4-3 at Campanelli Stadium in Game 4 of the 2006 Can-Am League Championship Series, forcing a decisive Game 5 Sunday at 1:05 PM. RHP Jon Koch saved his second straight game with a scoreless ninth inning, preserving the victory for starting pitcher RHP Wayne Lundgren and the Rox, who trailed 2-0 in the series but have rallied to win the next two games. 1B Francisco Lebron had a two-run single against his former team and LF EugenEugene Julien hit just his second career HR, a solo shot in the fourth inning. The Rox and Capitales play a single game for the 2006 Can-Am League Championship on Sunday at Campanelli Stadium at 1:05 PM.

After two scoreless innings, the Rox struck first in the third inning. Julien drew a leadoff walk against RHP Jorge Perez. RF John Schmitz perfectly executed a hit-a-run single, pushing Julien to third base. CF Joe Hough drove home the game’s first run with an RBI single, and three batters later, Lebron made it 3-0 Brockton with a two-run single through the left side. In the fourth, Julien drove a solo HR into the Capitales Bullpen in left-center, putting the home nine ahead 4-0.

Quebec rallied for a run in the fifth and got a run in the sixth against RHP Brad Guy, who pitched out the bullpen for the Rox for just the second time in 2006. In the eighth, Guy allowed three consecutive hits, including a CF Goefrey Tomlinson RBI single that pulled the Capitales to within a run. With two on and nobody out, Guy fanned 1B Eddie Lantigua, induced a groundout and a flyout to preserve the Rox lead.

In the ninth, Koch retired the first two batters before allowing a pinch-hit single to PH Mathieu Bergeron. He walked DH T.J. Shimizu on a close 3-2 offering, putting the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. 2B Dany Scalabrini flied out to left field, sending the series to a fifth and final game.

Tomorrow, RHP John Kelly makes his second start of the series against RHP Gabe Ribas for Quebec. Kelly tossed a complete-game four-hitter in his first playoff game against New Haven County but took a tough-luck loss in Game 2 of the Championship Series. Ribas was the league’s right-handed starter on the Post-Season All-Star Team, and will make his first start of the series. The final game of the 2006 Can-Am League Season and Championship Series begins Sunday at 1:05 PM.
