The Atari Lynx was released in 1989 and to me, will always remain a mystery. The Atari Lynx was superior to the Nintendo Game Boy in almost every way imaginable... however it was crushed by the Game Boy. The Lynx was the first handheld with a color display. It had superior graphics. Yet still, everyone seemed to side with the Game Boy. The Lynx was actually designed by Epyx in 1986 under the name Handy Game, however when facing financial difficulties, they came to an agreement with Atari. Drawbacks compared to the Game Boy were that the Lynx required 6 AA batteries (compared to 4), was a heavier system, had a shorter battery life, and was more expensive ($190 to $90). |
