The Texas Instruments 99/4A was a home computer released in June of 1981 with a suggested retail price of $525. It was the predecessor of the TI 99/4, which was released in later 1979 at a price of $1150. At its peak, Texas Instruments was able to secure about 35% of the home computer market at that time. To compete with Commodore, it was only a matter of time before Texas Instruments was forces to slash their prices and in the end were selling their computers at a loss to hang in the market. After losing $330 million in the third quarter of 1983, Texas Instruments dropped out of the computer market. At one point in here, there was an issue where the user would suffer an electrical shock when plugging in the computer, which i'm sure didn't help matters. This was solved by getting a free plug adapter. In the end, they sold about 2.8 million units by March 1984. |
